A week in the life of an agency head
No two days are the same. That sounds like a cliche, but it’s absolutely true of agency life. We really do never know what project will land, what conversation we’ll have, what will happen month to month, week to week and day to day.
And it’s all I’ve ever known, agency life; there is never ever a dull moment! Here’s what I’ve been up to this week:
Monday starts bright and early with a 7 am dog walk before chauffeuring Chloe to her GCSE art exam, the morning kicks off with a flurry of work emails and meetings. Juggling multiple projects and clients, the day is packed with discussions ranging from government initiatives to corporate strategy rollouts. Despite the whirlwind, there's a moment to enjoy a quick lunch break before diving back into team meetings, interrupted briefly by a call to collect an ill child from school.
More Teams calls and internal meetings to plan upcoming marketing blogs and discussing content for LinkedIn for Cosy Meercat. Amidst it all, there's positive feedback on a particular project delivery, with one client expressing being "blown away" by the results. Such a tonic hearing that.
Wrapping up with the anticipation of an evening choir session, where Abba songs await, the day promises a warm end to a busy Monday.
Tuesday begins with another early morning dog walk. Doing the odd email as I go, catching up on WhatsApps and clearing my head for the day.
Littlest child is off again today. Hubs takes the older one to her GCSE Art exam. I forget to send the smallest one’s absence to school. I’m a crap mother at times…..
A morning of meetings again - daily huddle for the Deepfakes project, a call with Simon Thompson about a SharePoint project. Ideas and an estimate sent to the client. Discovery Delivery for another team, meeting with a potential new colleague, introduced to me by someone else I work with. Always good to be growing the team.
And finally, yoga this evening. Great to ‘down dog’ and REEELAAAAX!
Wednesday is my London day where I spend the day in Vauxhall working in house with a client. It’s often a day of in person meetings and today is no different. Catching up with the comms team on content plans for the month ahead.
This is also the client I’m doing the comms for the Deepfakes on, so there’s lots to plan around that - whether we can have an external facing website (turns out, not). Loads of red tape to jump through, but really enjoying this work, so much.
Trains are up the swanny so I get back later than planned and have a nice quiet family sups, nagging the kids about GCSE revision and homework as I go!
Thursday is back in the office with Sophie. Meeting with Cap Gemini about a case study, work on deepfakes to define the Challenge statements and plan for the next event. Sophie and I are currently fasting, so we grab Espressos to keep our energy up in the morning and to keep the hunger at bay for a while longer!
Curve ball meetings come in late morning for meetings in the afternoon. It’s so easy to have meetings these days that they come in thick and fast - that would never have happened pre-Covid and I sometimes struggle with it. The upside is it means less travel!
Friday sees me recording a voiceover on a presentation we’re delivering to a client so that those not at the meeting have it properly presented to them - we’re doing this more and more these days.
I try to use Fridays as a down day with less client meetings and more working on the business. That approach hasn’t been working that well recently, but I manage to do some planning and work on commitments from my TAB board which makes me feel good. I also follow up on LinkedIn messages and do some work on our marketing plan. Small steps, but feeling like I am doing something for the business, rather than just working in it is good!
I can’t believe another week has flown by. Looking forward to a gentle weekend with the family and if the rain stops, some time to give my garden (and me!) a little TLC.
If you’re interested in an agency career, do let me know. I love to talk about my career path and support anyone with an interest in this area. It’s not for the faint of heart but it’s thrilling and I love it!
